NEW ZEALAND VICTORIOUS IN V8 UTE TRANS TASMAN TEST PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 18 April 2010 21:47

It took until the final race of the three match test series but after three days of hot competition on the tough 3.4 kilometre Hamilton Street circuit it was New Zealand who won the V8 Ute Trans Tasman Test Series this weekend.

The title was sealed in the third and final test match, raced over 14 laps this morning.

New Zealand's Chris Pither was on pole in his ENZED Falcon with Australian Kim 'The Assassin' Jane alongside in his Bob Jane T-Marts Commodore. The two drivers had one win each coming into the finale and everything depended on the outcome of the race.

Pither got the jump from pole position and led into the first corner from Jane, Australian Robert 'Captain' Jarvis in his BVC Racing Ford and kiwi Simon 'Jnr Burner' Beirne in his Team McDonald's Ford. Jarvis was swamped on the second lap as Beirne got through followed by defending Trans Tasman Ute Champion Charlie 'Handlebars' Kovacs of Australia in his Wilson Security Commodore and kiwis Colin 'Crusha' Corkery in his Supercharge Batteries Falcon and Matthew 'The Phantom' Lockwood in his older Styrofit Underfloor Insulation VU Commodore.

Pither and Jane pulled a gap on the rest of the field initially and then Pither began to put some distance on Jane. It was the most dominant performance of the weekend as Pither went on to win by more than 5 seconds after the duo had fought tooth and nail in the first two races to share the wins the previous day.

After the race Pither said his crew had made a couple of changes to enable the ENZED Falcon to last the distance better. "I went in with the mindset to conserve when I could. It was very consistent. My first 8 or 9 laps were all within .4 of a second every lap. It did drop off a bit but I chose to push on for a buffer. I was ready for the tyres and brakes to start fading. It was a great weekend and it was good for the ute category to be at the country's highest profile event putting on a good show."

Despite the result in the final race Jane had a fantastic time. "I buggered my start in todays race. I tried hanging on the back of him (Pither) but I didn't have enough. He was a bit better here and there. I was quicker yesterday. These cars are sensitive to tyre pressure and ride height changes." Jane was very complimentary of the Hamilton circuit.
"Apart from the Albert Park GP track this is one of the best street circuits. There are enough different types of corners to make it a challenge."

Behind Pither and Jane today Beirne drove a superb race to third place after disposing of Jarvis. The drive capped a great weekend for the kiwi, putting him on the event podium for the weekend after little racing in recent times. Corkery applied huge pressure to Kovacs throughout the race and finished fourth after the Australian overshot turn one. Former New Zealand Champion Lockwood was sent to the pits after some bodywork came loose and finished 12th.

The final order behind Pither, Jane and Beirne was Corkery, Jarvis, Kovacs, Simon 'Sly Si' Grace of New Zealand in his Parker Racor Holden and Australians George 'Hollywood' Elliot (Vittoria Coffee Commodore) and Greg 'Freddy' Willis (Grove Juice Falcon). Kiwis Peter 'Rocketman' Robb (Hill Country Helicopters Holden) and Graham 'Snr Burner' Beirne (John Jones Steel Falcon) were next after a torrid battle and a tight dash for the line.

James Huggi Urqhuart spun at the chicane on the final lap nosing into the wall in the Wildcard Racing Commodore while Geoff 'Spence' Spencer of New Zealand in his Transpecs Commodore and Australian Allan 'King Al' Letcher in his WA Lifting Equipment Holden were other retirements.

TRANS TASMAN PRIDE HANGS ON FINAL RACE PDF Print E-mail

The Trans Tasman V8 Ute Test Series is set for an epic showdown on the streets of Hamilton tomorrow morning. The hotly contested series is all tied up after the opening two "test matches" today.

Honours were shared today and Trans Tasman pride is now hanging on the outcome of tomorrow mornings third and final race over 14 laps. The first two races produced some pulsating racing around the demanding 3.4 kilometre Hamilton Street circuit.

New Zealand Champion Chris Pither 'The Doctor' in his ENZED Falcon and Kim 'The Assassin' Jane in his Bob Jane T-Marts Commodore shared the wins after being the two fastest qualifiers yesterday. Pither had pole for the opening test match this morning but it was Jane who got the jump and led away. Pither 'The Doctor' then stalked 'The Assassin' over the early laps before making his move and taking the lead. However Jane was back in front soon after as Pither struggled to find a gear into Turn 1. Once past Jane held the lead to the finish taking the test match for Australia from Pither. Australian Charlie 'Handlebars' Kovacs was third in his Wilson Security Commodore ahead of Simon 'Junior Burner' Beirne who was fourth for New Zealand in his Team McDonald's Falcon.

New Zealander Colin 'Crusha' Corkery was next in his Supercharge Batteries Commodore  ahead of Australian Robert 'Captain' Jarvis (BVC Racing Ford) followed by kiwi Matty 'The Phantom' Lockwood (Styrofit Underfloor Insulation Commodore). Next up were Aussie Allan 'King Al' Letcher (WA Lifting Equipment Holden) and another of the kiwis, Graham 'Snr Burner' Beirne (John Jones Steel Falcon).

Australia also clinched the lap record when Jane set the fastest lap of the race, a time of 1 minute 41.0700.

This afternoons second test match was even more torrid with plenty of door to door battles throughout the field. Jane had pole for the second test and took the lead from the start with Pither again hounding him. After a short safety car period the battle resumed with Pither eventually getting by after a move that lasted several corners.

Pither took the race to even the score for the kiwis, setting up a no holds barred decider tomorrow morning. Jane was second, meaning he and Pither are equal in the drivers points also.

Simon 'Jnr Burner' Beirne took third after a fantastic drive after he was shuffled back to fifth in the early exchanges. However he drove well to get back to third ahead of Jarvis, Corkery and former New Zealand Champion Lockwood, frustrated by a lack of speed after testing well.

Kovacs, the defending Trans Tasman Champion jumped the start and the resulting penalty dropped him to 18th while Letcher touched the wall on the front straight, damaging his suspension early on. Graham 'Snr Burner' Beirne was shunted from behind and turned around recovering to 16th.

Warren 'Wakeup' Millet was back on track today in his Wakeup Backpackers Commodore after a heavy accident yesterday, working his way back as high as 11th in the second race.

The all important decider takes place over 14 laps at 10.20am on Sunday morning.

TRANS TASMAN BATTLE PERFECTLY PRIMED AT HAMILTON PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 16 April 2010 12:04

The Trans-Tasman battle of the V8 Utes is perfectly primed with the two fastest qualifiers around the Hamilton streets today from each side of the Tasman. While series rules state that one driver from each country will start side by side on each row of the grid that is exactly how the front two rows of the grid panned out today based on qualifying times.

Recently crowned New Zealand Champion Chris Pither 'The Doctor' took his ENZED Falcon to the fastest time of the session when he recorded a 1.40.9488 second lap around the 3.4 kilometre Hamilton circuit. However just .2772 of a second slower today was the fastest of the Australians, Kim 'The Assassin' Jane in his Bob Jane T-Marts Commodore. Colin 'Crusha' Corkery of New Zealand was the third fastest with a 1.42.8087 in his Supercharge Batteries Commodore while defending Trans-Tasman Champion Charlie 'Handlebars' Kovacs of Australia was just a fraction behind Corkery in his Wilson Security Commodore to to set up a great duel in the opening race of this high speed test match tomorrow.

Pither banked a lap early today before some carnage later in the session left some coolant on the track. "Everyone is in the spirit of the challenge and we've got a couple of quick Aussies, Kim Jane and Charlie Kovacs in there. It should be a good race," said Pither.

On times the next fastest today were Simon 'Jnr Burner' Beirne of Christchurch in his Team McDonald's Falcon followed by countryman Matthew Lockwood of Palmerston North in another Commodore.

The concrete walls that line the 3.4 kilometre street circuit played a part in todays proceedings with Australian Warren 'Wakeup' Millet getting a real wake up call when he crashed heavily, badly damaging his Commodore. It is hoped that the ute will be repaired in time for tomorrow's races. Others to make contact with the unforgiving walls were kiwi James 'Huggi' Urquhart in his Wildcard Racing Holden while Corkery also had a close encounter, just brushing a wall without inflicting serious damage.

Two of the kiwis were also in the wars, avoiding the walls but not each other, as Peter 'Rocketman' Robb hit the back of Geoff 'Spence' Spencers ute.

The first two races, both over 10 laps, take place tomorrow. The first is scheduled for 9.05am with the second timed to start at 1.20pm. The third and final contest over 14 laps is scheduled for 10.20am on Sunday morning.

The V8 Ute races will also feature in the New Zealand television coverage of the event on TV3. Race 1 will screen at 2.15pm on Saturday afternoon with the second race set to reach the screen at 5.30pm. Full race coverage of the third and final race will screen at 5.30pm on Sunday.

The NZV8 Utes Series enjoys support from corporate partners, ENZED, Radio Hauraki, Yokohama and Castrol for this season while the NZV8 Utes are managed by category manager, Jamie Kett of Event 1.

FAMILY SPLIT OVER TRANS TASMAN V8 UTE BATTLE PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 15 April 2010 12:19

A family has been divided as the Trans Tasman V8 Ute Challenge gets ready to rumble in Hamilton this weekend.

'Dirty Dave' Kernohan of Turangi will line up as part of the New Zealand team in his KCL Contracting Falcon while his son Jeff 'The Dingo' Kernohan takes to the track for Australia in his Energy Oil/Raffs Tyre Services Falcon.

Both are keen to get the upper hand as a team of Australians arrive to take on their kiwi V8 Ute racing counterparts at New Zealand's biggest motor race weekend of the year.

'Dirty Dave' has been a regular competitor in New Zealand since the final round of the inaugural series three years ago and finished sixth in this years championship while 'Dingo' has just one V8 Ute round under his belt. However both are keen to come out on top in this high speed international contest.

"There is a definite rivalry there," says Dave. "It's nothing unfriendly, it's good fun. I'm looking forward to racing on the Hamilton Street circuit and I am hoping that we kiwis can knock over the Aussies - especially now!" Dave worked in Australia for five and a half years and while he was living across the Tasman son Jeff was born hence the younger Kernohans allegiance with the Australians.

"I was born in Sydney," explains Jeff. "When I was three and a half years old we moved to New Zealand but I've always considered myself an Aussie," says the man who has picked up the nickname 'Dingo'.

Jeff is very new to V8 Utes, contesting his first ever event in the final round of the New Zealand Series at Timaru last month. "I absolutely enjoyed myself. I just tried to stay out of the way. I didn't want to muck up anyones championship. This time it's no holds barred," he says. Prior to his ute debut 'Dingo' had no motor racing experience. I had done jetskis and dirt bikes and crewed for race trucks. However 'Dingo' seems undaunted by the new experience awaiting him on the concrete wall lined Hamilton Street circuit. 'It will be interesting," he says.

The Kernohans are just two drivers who are fiercely competitive and extremely loyal to their respective country's who will battle for Trans Tasman honours in a new addition to the programme at the ITM 400 in Hamilton, the New Zealand round of the V8 Supercar Championship.

Both the Australian and New Zealand V8 Ute Series are hard fought with spectacular racing and great characters. Drivers such as Chris Pither 'The Doctor' and Matt Lockwood 'The Phantom' of New Zealand and Charlie 'Handlebars' Kovacs and Kim 'The Assassin' Jane of Australia will provide racing action that will be as good as any on the street s of Hamilton this weekend. To make things even more competitive each row of the grid will feature a driver from each country so it is game on.

After a 30 minute test session at 8.55am on Friday morning there will be a 20 minute qualifying period at 10.40am. The first two races over 10 laps are scheduled for Saturday at 9.05am and 1.20pm respectively with the third and final contest over 14 laps timed to start at 10.20am on Sunday morning.

BURNERS READY TO TAKE ON OZ IN HAMILTON AT THE V8 UTE TEST MATCH OF THE CENTURY PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 14 April 2010 23:27

National podium winners, the father and son dynamic duo of Graham "Snr Burner' Beirne and Simon 'Jnr Burner' Beirne are certain to be major players as they represent the New Zealand team in this weekends Trans Tasman V8 Ute Test Match, part of the ITM 400 around the streets of Hamilton. Senior Burner and Junior “Mac Burger” as he has been commonly referred to are accomplished competitors in the Ute category and with three races to decide Trans Tasman bragging rights at Hamilton this weekend they will be key men to the kiwis chances.

Graham 'Snr' Burner is fresh from a stellar season in the NZ V8 Ute Series. At 62 years of age and still with plenty left in him he showed speed and consistency in his John Jones Steel Falcon throughout the season to finish third in the hard fought championship behind two of the young guns of New Zealand motorsport - Chris Pither and Caine Lobb. Meanwhile Simon 'Jnr Burner', sporting the Golden Arch’s of his proud sponsor McDonalds finished runner-up in the inaugural NZ V8 Ute Series in 2008 and fourth by one point the following season. One of the many   highlights in that time was his round victory at the A1GP World Cup Of Motorsport event at Taupo in January 2009. This season 'Jnr Burner' has had a break from the series due to focusing on his business and further family commitments but he and his familiar Team McDonald's Falcon were excited to return to the final round last month in Timaru and grabbed plenty of attention by qualifying on the front row of the grid after more than twelve months away from the track, proving he is very much a force to be reckoned with.

The Burners are now ready and waiting for the Trans Tasman battle that awaits them only a few days away at the challenging and demanding street circuit at Hamilton.

"As a motor racing enthusiast you want to race at the pinnacle events and this is one of them. There will be huge Ford support for our team and sporting the Golden Arch's we will have the crowd well and truly behind us....its going to be fun. I must remember to keep telling myself that as concrete walls are looming up at over 200 kms an hour," he jests. "This is NZ v Australia at a V8 Supercar round, it doesn't get any bigger!"

"The biggest event in my career to date was the A1GP event at Taupo - it was the pinnacle of my career to be on the podium with the cup, squirting the champagne. I would like to fulfil that same goal in Hamilton."

Looking at the challenge ahead Simon continues, "I will take it in my stride. It is a street circuit and it will be very demanding and it will need all the focus I can muster. We have to finish all three races. To finish first, first you must finish. This is very much a cliche statement but ohh so true. We don't have the budget of the V8 Supercars, nowhere near it, so we are only able to practice on this course for 30 minutes in our first session, then we have a 30 minute qualifying session, prior to our first race. So there is not a lot lof time for us to get to know the track. Mentally the walls will also be a challenge but Graham and I raced the street circuit in Nelson a number of years ago now and you do adjust and sync into the course, then the rules change and you slowly tame the beast and treat it like any other course you have been on before. I think it is also Graham and my turn for a little luck to aid our quest this weekend. I intend to put my best foot forward. I have my own goals. I want to raise the flag high for McDonald's and do well for our team, friends and family behind the scenes."

Simon says his father, 'Snr Burner', has the same goals. "Dad is the same. He's still on a high after securing third in the national championship. Andy Neale will go through our data and tell us what we need to do, he is exceptional in his field and along with Richard from DCH Motorsport we will be very well heeled. However we will need consistency and luck. Dad is exceedingly competitive, moreso now at 62 than he was at 18. The target will be to head back to Christchurch with two utes back on the trailer with none or minimal damage while we can walk away extremely proud of our efforts. Then at 10.30am Sunday morning after the final race we can sit back and watch how the big boys in the V8 Supercars do it."

Competitors in the Trans Tasman V8 Ute Test Series will receive a 30 minute test session at 8.55am on Friday morning before qualifying at 10.40am. The first two races take place on Saturday at 9.05am and 1.20pm over 10 laps. The final race over 14 laps is due to take place at 10.20am on Sunday morning.

In addition to the support of major partners McDonalds and John Jones Steel in conjunction with Simon Beirne Limited, “Integrity in Vehicle Brokering,” the team also has support from Bruce Raxworthy Panel & Paint, Chevron Quality Cars-Driving Excellence, Business IT Software Management Systems, Mag & Turbo Warehouse, Jeffs Vehicle Deliveries and Lets Get Graphic and DJ Hewitt Builders Ltd.
